The history of Roulette is a controversial subject and is a perfect example of how myths can propagate on both the internet and in print. Anyone who carries out basic research into the history of the game will come across the much repeated story that the famous French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented the Roulette Wheel in a vain attempt to produce a perpetual motion machine.

Blaise Pascal was a brilliant mathematician and also a very religious man. During certain times in his life he found that these two sides of his being were in severe conflict and that by pursuing mathematics he was some how offending God. As a result he abandoned mathematics altogether and devoted himself to religion and philosophy.

During this time of mental conflict he wrote of opposing forces that control the human psyche, and he proclaimed that one could not exist without the other. There could be no good without evil, no joy without pain. He believed that there was a “perpetual motion” between these conflicting senses. Note that this was the only allusion he ever made to perpetual motion. Mathematically he was fully aware that the Laws of Thermodynamics had proven that physical perpetual motion was impossible.

During this time he became ill and suffered tremendous physical as well as mental pain, but he found that concentrating on challenging mathematical problems eased his suffering. He believed that this was a message from God to resume his mathematics, and this is what he did in earnest. He concentrated on the very challenging mathematics of rotating curves which are known as cycloids, or in French, roulettes. He developed his theories and published his work in a paper entitled “L’Histoire de la Roulette”.

Blaise Pascal did not invent the roulette wheel but early descriptions of his inventions may certainly have inspired whoever did!
